Checking your telephone line quality with a 56K modem and Windows 95/98

(Also works with many 33.6 modems)

Exit your browser and disconnect from Hudson Valley Internet

Click on [Start] > [Programs] > [Accessories] > [HyperTerminal].

Double-click the [Hypertrm.exe] icon and name the connection "Test", then click [OK].

When the "Phone number" window appears, leave the phone number blank and go to the "Connect using" field below. Click on the down arrow and choose "Direct to COM x" where "x" is the com port your modem is using, then click [OK].

When the "Port Settings" window appears, go to the "Bits per second" field and click on the down arrow and choose 57600, then click [OK].

You should now see a blank window with a cursor.

Type ATZ and press the [Enter] key, the word "OK" should appear.

Type AT&FDT256-2300 and press [Enter]. Your computer should now dial our server, connect and prompt you for a "Login" name. Type in your HVI username and press [Enter]. Type in your HVI password when prompted and press [Enter].

After approximately 20 seconds, select [Call] > [Disconnect] on the top of your HyperTerminal window.

Now type AT&V1 and press [Enter]. You should now see information on your last modem connection displayed in the window.

Look for the Line Quality number. Typically a number between 0 - 20 is best on a 56K modem, much higher then 30 and you will probably not get a reliable 56K connection.

Feel free to call us if you have any questions or on how to interpret the results.
